About Ms. Jessica Sotelo...
I am a Teacher Candidate at California State University, San Marcos, working towards my Social Science Single Subject teaching credential. I obtained my B.A. in History and Psychology, with a minor in Education, from UC Davis in 2013. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with high school students as a tutor, after-school program supervisor, Substitute Teacher, and now as a Teacher Candidate. Through each of those experiences, I have been able to witness my students gain a new sense of confidence as they master material and engage in critical thinking. I wholeheartedly believe every student possesses the ability to learn and thrive academically if they are provided with the appropriate set of tools, guidance, and support system in school.
Outside of the classroom, I enjoy reading novels, watching shows on Netflix, going on an occasional run, and spending time with my family.

Educational Philosophy
My educational philosophy is a combination of Progressivism and Reconstructionism. I believe learning should be active and student-centered, take into account the interests of students, and help students develop new values they can use to create a better future outside of school. Moreover, I believe schools serve a greater purpose than just transmitting knowledge. Schools have the ability and power to lead the way in reconstructing our society by addressing issues of social inequities, meeting the needs of traditionally underserved students, and by encouraging students to take action against cases of inequality and intolerance.
